Faith

As I sit and ponder what Christmas means to me, I am often filled with twisted emotions. For there is nothing more precious than excitement in a child, closeness of family and smiles accross faces. Yet I sit and think about the precious gift that God gave to us that we celebrate this day for. To think that God came in human form to save all of us from our sins through our failth and belief in Him. So lowly a birth, so quite and tucked away, unrecognized by most. I can't help but to think about how a savior came into this world in the most unpleasant conditions. Can't help to wonder what Joseph thought. The faith that was in Joseph was the most compelling of all. A man, so young, with a woman who carried a child that was not his. The ridicule that he bore, due to his choice to believe that God had his hand on his life. Even in today's world, when so many children have no father, there are very few men that would indeed take upon him the responsibility to take care of someone else's child. To have faith like Joseph's, to take a woman that he never had been with, yet; she was pregnant, go through all the ridicule, and choose to stay with Mary, must have been the greatest challenge to his faith that he faced. And to travel the journey to Bethlehem because Caesar Augustus had put into law a taxation would to be done. During this time, when taxes were due, every man had to go back to his hometown. And Joseph was from the city of David which which was Bethlehem. He made that journey with the woman who was very pregnant. And, because of the taxation and the journey of many men to their hometowns, there was no room at the inn for them to be. So, with faith, he cleaned out a corner of a manger in a "barn" lining it with hay so that ,when Mary brought forth the Son of God, she would have somewhere to lie him. They had no family present. There was no one to help them through labor as often times families do. Mary laid in labor on the hay and I'm sure that Joseph attempted to comfort his wife the best that he knew how. It must have been only with amazing faith that he could endure such a event alone, not really knowing only believing. Listening to God and obeying his direction, even when it must have seemed crazy to him. For me this seems to be the biggest and the most amazing display of faith in the Bible. For, during this time, to have a woman pregnant, out of wedlock, brought great shame to a man. It also brought a casting out with it. Mary and Joseph were alone. Their faith in God was all they had. Joseph could have ran and said, " no I will not take Mary as my wife, I will not wait until a child is born before I take Mary for myself, I will not raise a male child that is not my own flesh and blood, nor will I will change the course of my life for a promise that I cannot fathom. For who is this voice that tells me Mary will bring into the world a savior?" Joseph, however; changed the course of his life, took Mary as his wife, was not with her until the child was born, comforted and eased the pain and emotional turmoil as his wife went through labor and raised a child that was not his. He chose to obey God with faith despite what it meant to his own life, his own emotions, and his status among the people. This is why I believe Joseph was a great man of faith and perhaps demonstrated, to the people, that when we listen to God and not our feelings, not our emotions, not our status, not our families, but truly listen to the direction God gives us, we will be rewarded beyond our imagination. This Christmas I pray you all the Faith of Joseph. God made you, He knows you, and most of all He loves you. There is no hole so deep that the hand of God can not reach. He knows you are not perfect for all have sinned. Jesus's own earthly family was muddled with many shady characters. God used the most unlikely people to do his work, even a dead man. You are precious in his sight. And yes He can even use you.

Merry Christmas,

The Greatest Gift

As I sat this morning playing a game on Facebook, it said that I had received a free gift. When I clicked on the link to redeem my gift, it promptly told me, "Sorry, your gift has already been redeemed." Of course at first I sat and wondered, why is it that they continually repeat, "you have received a gift" if in fact it is already been redeemed. You would think that, in this time and day, that the computer would be smart enough not to keep telling me I received a gift when I've already clicked on that link. Then I thought about Christmas being yesterday and that everybody probably has opened most their gifts by now. As a parent, there were times when I spent so much time and effort thinking about what to get someone, purchasing that item, and wrapping that item with great expectation of the coming excitement, for it to be less wondrous than my anticipation. And I looked back and I wondered about some of the gifts that I had given and what it meant to me to give them. I know there have been gifts that I have given that meant far more to me than what they meant to the one that received them. Then I started to think, what was my greatest gift I gave to someone? I thought about the one that I spend the most money on; I thought about another that I spent the most time on. I thought about the one that was the funniest, held the most meaning, or was just the most unexpected gift to the most un-expecting receiver. Along my journey of thinking about these things, I thought about what was the greatest gift that I received. I received a handful of gifts this year. All of them had special meaning, because all the givers mean something special to me.

Then my train of conversation, with myself, was quickly interrupted with this question. "Lauree, what was the greatest gift that you received?"

Well, Good morning God!

I went to my Bible and looked; seeking to find the one gift that God had given me that would be the greatest of all. John 3: 16 "for God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" NIV. Hallelujah! What a gift to receive! From that one gift, I have received mercy, grace, forgiveness and eternal life. Romans 10:9 "… That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved". And in verse 12 "for there is no distinction between Jew and Greek for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon him". And in verse 13 "for whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved".

When God gave us his greatest gift, he changed our lives forever. With Jesus’ blood, God purchased believers from the slavery of sin. We all know that all of us are sinners whether you believe in God or not. But for those that believe in Jesus what we received was a forgiveness of those sins. By quickly acknowledging and asking for forgiveness, we no longer have to bear the shame/bondage of our sins. Many people spend every day of their life bearing shame, feeling guilty, and rehashing every single thing they have ever done wrong. This way of living life prevents them from ever becoming fully what God intended them to be. My greatest gift was from God. By giving this world his only son, not intervening in his crucifixion, and raising him again, I received mercy, grace, forgiveness and eternal life. I know I am not to dwell on all my imperfections, my wrong doings or my sins. When the devil steps in and tries to tell me otherwise, I know God says differently. I know that if I allow God to work in my life, guide my footsteps, and allow him to work through me to bless others; I will become what God has intended for me. Ephesians 2:4 – 7 "because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions-it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Jesus Christ". And like playing the game this morning, my gift has been redeemed, but there is no sorry first. In the game I could play no longer, but with the gift I received from God I can continue. My "game" plays on. I don't have to wait for tomorrow, wait for somebody else to gift me, or purchase more credits, for God through Jesus Christ gave me the gift to keep going forward.

God made you, He knows you, and most of all He loves you. There is no hole so deep that the hand of God cannot reach. He knows you are not perfect for all have sinned. Jesus's own earthly family was muddled with many shady characters. God used the most unlikely people to do his work, even a dead man. You are precious in his sight. And yes He can even use you.

At the end of the old

Many of us sit and await the end of this year and the beginning of a new. Some of us will think of all the things that we did accomplish, being grateful of all the things that did and didn't happen, and set goals for all the things to come.

Some of us will sit, with disappointment, recognizing that this day, being the end, was no different than 365 days ago, the beginning, wondering if this whole year was worth it, questioning if we should even bother making a new resolution, dream, or goal.

Many times it seems the disappointments outweighed the accomplishments. When a resolution, a hope, a dream doesn't manifested in its entirety, we are often tempted to be discouraged by the lack of movement. I can certainly appreciate this. I dream of one day being able to write in a way that will encourage people to believe in themselves, strive to be the best, and know that God loves them. I want to share the things that I have learned, the very things that keep me going. However, as another year closes, my dream has a lot more growing to do. I know that God has a plan for me and that if I am patient he will give me the desires of my heart. No, dear brothers and sisters, I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven. Philippians 3:13-14 (NLT). Even when we think that nothing much has changed, If we look hard enough we can see how far we've come. After all, still being alive is a victory in itself. Situations that we have encountered over the last year have given us strength and courage to continue forward. I believe that God puts us in situations to strengthen us. What I have learned this year is that all those voices in your head, you know the ones, the self-doubting ones; they do not belong to God. The voice that tells you, " you are out of your mind, you can never do this, your friends/family will never approve, your loser, you're not good enough, you're too nervous, it's all a waste of time, no one is going to support you on this." This is all the work of Satan as he tries to steal your joy.

I have also learned to not listen to that voice. As soon as that voice enters into my thinking, I stop it by doing as Jesus did when he was tempted by Satan: Saying out loud…

"It is written…" and finishing it with a Scripture that is God's word.

“It is written…I am a light to others, and can exhibit goodness, righteousness and truth (Eph 5:8-9)

“It is written…I have not been given a spirit of fear, but of power, love and self-discipline (2Ti 1:7)”

“It is written…I am chosen and dearly loved (Col3:12)”

“It is written…I am more than a conqueror (Ro 8:37)”

“It is written …I am not alone (Heb 13:5)”

It is my New Year’s hope that you; too, will find out what is written about you. When you know what is written about you and the love that God has for you, you will be able to recognize when the voices in your head are not those of God. When the voices in your head are not encouraging you and bringing peace and strength then they are not of God. As soon as those self-destructive voices start to talk, trying to steal your joy, it is my hope that you will replace them with the true words that describe how God sees you.

“It is written” - I am protected from the evil one. John 17:15

“It is written” - I am loved by the Father. John 16:27.

May this New Year move you forward into your dreams…

From my mentor Joseph McClendon III...

Nothing splendid has ever been achieved without risk. Of all the risks wealth, health, even bodily harm. Fear of rejection and failure is the number one obstacle that most use to stop their momentum or even getting started. Hunt that fear like it threatens the very lives of your children. Find it, slaughter it, celebrate and boldly rock on.

To Risk

by William Arthur Ward

To laugh is to risk appearing a fool,
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.

To reach out to another is to risk involvement,
To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.

To place your ideas and dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss.

To love is to risk not being loved in return,
To live is to risk dying,
To hope is to risk despair,
To try is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.

The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing.

He may avoid suffering and sorrow,
But he cannot learn, feel, change, grow or live.

Chained by his servitude he is a slave who has forfeited all freedom.

Only a person who risks is free.

The pessimist complains about the wind;

The optimist expects it to change;

And the realist adjusts the sails.

Making Deliberate Decisions

Alice came to a fork in the road. "Which road do I take?" she asked.
"Where do you want to go?" responded the Cheshire cat.
"I don't know," Alice answered.
"Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."
~Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

If you know where you want to go then the decisions you make support your destination. If, however; you do not know where you want to be then the decisions you make may not lead you in the direction you should go.

Alright...so what does this mean.

To get somewhere in life you must know where it is you want to be.

Envision the goal

Think about where you are headed daily

What is the Dream?

What map have you made to get there?

When set out on the route of your destination...you start right where you are, just as you are and with the you you have.

You can't start your trip somewhere else...It starts where you are now.

Your mind is an incredible creature-your body responds to what you put into it.

If you put in Good ...you get out Good

If you put in Bad ...you get bad

If you put in the map and review it daily you will eventually get to where you want to be (and probably further).

BUT you must first start with knowing where you want to go...

PS If you google "I don't Know" in google maps---you will likely end up in a saloon.
